Submarines have played an important role in warfare since World War I when the German Navy attempted to cut the flow of supplies across the Atlantic from the United States to Europe – a failure that was repeated twenty-five years later in World War II. The decision taken in the 1950s to put nuclear warheads in ballistic missiles thrust the submarine into the forefront of the Cold War, and today the nuclear deterrents of the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France are either wholly or largely submerged beneath the world’s oceans.

Submarine Warfare Today describes the different types of submarines in service today, from the giant yet barely detectable ballistic missile submarines to the nuclear and diesel-powered attack submarines that patrol the high seas and shipping lanes. Each entry is illustrated by a full-colour artwork, with accompanying text that describes the submarine’s design, machinery, performance and history. There is also a full specifications table for each entry detailing displacement, crew size, weaponry carried, dimensions and speed above and below water. Also covered are the full range of submarine-carried missiles and torpedoes, as well as anti-submarine mines and torpedoes and the submarine-hunting helicopters and marine aircraft that carry them.
