The book commences with a study of the ships of the Mediterranean, where different ships were built for peaceful trade and for warfare. Through 36 pull-out gatefolds, the various challenges of each shipping era are explored, from the introduction of the gun in the 15th century to the use of nuclear power in submarines. Each gatefold contains depictions of the vessel in use, with a large annotated full-colour diagram.
