One of the most important moments in the history of World War II, the success of the Normandy Landings on 6 June 1944 marked the beginning of the end of the conflict.

Watch the detailed map animation, showing the progress of the attacks on the five beaches and the resistance they encountered

Listen to the audio commentary and follow the full course of the assault

Read the 3000-word historical account of the buildup to the operation, the course of the action and the aftermath to the Normandy Landings

View the gallery, including photographs and artworks of the battlefields, the tanks and landing craft, the soldiers. Locator maps show you exactly where it happened and charts give you a breakdown of the numbers of forces on each side.

Try out your knowledge of Operation Overlord with the battle quiz. Do you know which of the Allied countries attacked Gold Beach? Or what a Churchill Crocodile was? Or how many Allied ships were involved in the landings?
